Causes of Vein Abnormalities

Painful or unsightly leg veins are actually a result of the failure of a larger vein that travels down your entire leg.  The failure of this less visible vein can lead to the enlargement and bulging of other veins that receive too much blood.   Some patients have failure of this larger vein without visible varicose veins, and may experience pain from enlarged veins pressuring the nearby nerves.

When the larger leg vein fails to send blood upward to the heart, it results in a medical condition called venous insufficiency or venous reflux.   Venous insufficiency can be diagnosed and confirmed by an ultrasound scan, and is easily treated, followed by removal of the abnormal visible veins.  Your body then automatically redirects blood to healthy veins.

The procedure used to eliminate defective veins is generally called vein ablation. The procedure used to remove smaller visible veins is generally called phlebectomy.

Enlargements in very small veins (often called spider veins) can also be treated by small injections called sclerotherapy.
