Radiofrequency TREATMENT (closure®) Radiofrequency ablation of abnormal veins is another minimally invasive alternative to surgery. It is accomplished by utilizing a specialized catheter through which radiofrequency (RF) pulses can be transmitted to heat and close an abnormal vein. During the RF ablation procedure a specialized "closure" catheter is placed in the large, defective vein whose valves have failed. After injections of local anesthetic and saline fluid, radiofrequency energy is delivered until a target temperature is achieved within the vein, and then the catheter is slowly withdrawn—heating and sealing the vein walls during the withdrawal process. At the end of the procedure, an ultrasound scan is performed to confirm that the vein has been sealed shut. A compression bandage should be worn for 3 days after the procedure, and a compression stocking should also be worn for 7 days after the procedure. You can walk out of the room after the procedure, and normal activities can be resumed immediately. However, strenuous activities may be discouraged for a short period of time.
