Laser Treatment The process used to treat a vein with a laser is relatively simple, and very effective in eliminating veins with defective valves. This can happen to veins in your leg, arm, or even hand—and our treatments are designed to fix your problems as quickly and painlessly as possible. Laser therapy is also called venous ablation or Endovascular Venous Laser Therapy (EVLT), and is one of the simplest and most effective treatments for varicose veins. It has been shown to have over a 97% success rate! Your initial consultation will involve an ultrasound scan and a physical examination to map the portions of the vein that need to be treated. The treatment itself usually takes less than an hour. The targeted portion of the leg receives a small injection of a local anesthetic, and a very thin laser fiber is placed in the abnormal vein through a sheath. Laser light is emitted to the abnormal vein in short pulses that may be unfamiliar, but are not painful. This process is continued while the laser fiber is pulled through the length of the abnormal vein and withdrawn. At the end of the procedure, an ultrasound scan is performed to confirm that the vein has been sealed shut. A compression bandage should be worn for 3 days after the procedure, and a compression stocking should also be worn for 7 days after the procedure. You can walk out of the room after the procedure, and normal activities can be resumed immediately. However, strenuous activities may be discouraged for a short period of time. VeinCare of Richmond is proud to offer laser treatments using the VenaCure™ laser, manufactured by Angiodynamics, Incorporated.
